Marcus Miller has a 45-year career, 2 Grammy Awards, the Edison Prize for his entire work, and a Jazz Victory to name just a few of the distinctions and accolades that have been awarded to him around the world. In 2013, UNESCO named him an Artist for Peace and spokesperson for the Slave Route project.
Marcus is a creator, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and an extraordinary and prolific composer. His many collaborations with the greatest: Miles Davis, Eric Clapton, George Benson, Aretha Franklin, Brian Ferry, Wayne Shorter, Al Jarreau, Herbie Hancock, and Carlos Santana, to name but a few, have shaped his musical environment.
Marcus Miller’s appearances on stage with young, talented musicians are events in a universe that exists somewhere between today’s Funk, Soul, and Jazz… Marcus Miller knows how to do everything, and he does it very well.

In 2009 and 2010, Marcus travelled to Africa for a series of concerts. On this occasion, he was invited to the island of Gorée to visit the House of Slaves, where Africans—his ancestors—were kept in captivity, piled on top of each other, and then thrown on boats bound for slavery. What Marcus experienced on this island, what he felt in the House of Slaves, inspired him to write Gorée, one of his most beautiful compositions and one of his most successful works. Marcus still says today that anger, pain, and resentment were undeniable feelings, but that he wanted above all to pay homage, to celebrate the capacity of man to overcome horrors and to find joy and happiness despite difficulties and hardships.
TRIBUTE TO MILES
Watch the clip from Jazz À Vienne
The place of Marcus in the career of Miles Davis—his compositions, his productions, their complicity—is such that he was considered the legitimate producer of a project bringing together Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sean Rickman, and Sean Jones on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Miles’ passing. This tribute was conceived as the major event of the summer of 2011—an exclusive project dedicated to nine performances on the nine most important stages in Europe!

We discovered Selah Sue when her debut album, This World, was released in the summer of 2011. The first track on the album begins with a bass line, a groove, and something that instantly made us think of Marcus, so we tried to provoke a meeting between the two artists.

Among the people who contributed to the development of Marcus’ career and his expansion across Europe, Jean-René Palacio was the initiator of this magnificent project, just like that of Tribute to Miles (see below).
During a dinner in 2007, Jean-René, then artistic director of the SBM Monte-Carlo group, asked Marcus if he would be tempted by a collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Principality. Marcus, who had already had the opportunity to play on the stage of the Opera, was seduced by the idea and deepened it by working on a repertoire specially designed for the occasion. The concert took place on November 29, 2008, at the Opéra Garnier as part of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival and was a completely sold out show.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Istanbul Fondation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), as part of the Jazz Festival and broadcast live on television, Marcus gave a unique concert with his band and Turkish musicians. The event was conceived as a fusion between the East and the West that would have music as a common language.
