In 2009 and 2010, Marcus travelled to Africa for a series of concerts. On this occasion, he was invited to the island of Gorée to visit the House of Slaves, where Africans—his ancestors—were kept in captivity, piled on top of each other, and then thrown on boats bound for slavery. What Marcus experienced on this island, what he felt in the House of Slaves, inspired him to write Gorée, one of his most beautiful compositions and one of his most successful works. Marcus still says today that anger, pain, and resentment were undeniable feelings, but that he wanted above all to pay homage, to celebrate the capacity of man to overcome horrors and to find joy and happiness despite difficulties and hardships.

Inspired by his work and his speech, by his extraordinary talent and his positive energy, we wanted to bring his message and his music to as many people as possible, to reach a wider audience. Through this reflection and work logic, we made contact with UNESCO, and Marcus is now an Artist for Peace and Spokesperson for the Slave Route Project.

Following his appointment, Marcus composed the album Afrodeezia, an album on which the following words can be read on the back of the cover:

«This music is a celebration of people’s ability to endure and overcome oppression, finding hope, meaning and joy through music.

I was recently named the spokesperson for UNESCO’s « Slave Route Project ». It’s a project aimed at raising awareness of the story of slavery – reaching out particularly to younger people who may not be aware of what folks have endured (and still endure in some parts of the world).

As I speak to people it becomes apparent how important music is in giving a voice to people who have no voice. African slaves in the US took their experiences and put it into the music. They figured out a way to turn their pain and suffering into amazing sounds: spirituals, blues, jazz, R&B

This is a celebration of those amazing sounds.

For this project, I collaborated with musicians from West Africa, South America, The Caribbean, the southern US and the large northern cities of the US. This is my way of paying tribute to the long journey of my African ancestors who became African-Americans. The melodies and rhythms they carried with them from Africa have EXPLODED into a « dizzying » array of musical styles and genres that have changed the world.  »

With this album, « Afrodeezia, » Marcus was nominated for a Grammy Award; he played nearly 120 concerts around the world (in less than 18 months), and Madam Director General of UNESCO, at that time Irina Bokova, declared Marcus Miller as an artist « who has touched the hearts and minds of women and men around the world, » as « a musician who has won the most famous awards and who embodies the spirit of creativity, freedom, and resistance, which is at the heart of music. »

TRIBUTE TO MILES

The place of Marcus in the career of Miles Davis—his compositions, his productions, their complicity—is such that he was considered the legitimate producer of a project bringing together Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Sean Rickman, and Sean Jones on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of Miles’ passing. This tribute was conceived as the major event of the summer of 2011—an exclusive project dedicated to nine performances on the nine most important stages in Europe!

We discovered Selah Sue when her debut album, This World, was released in the summer of 2011. The first track on the album begins with a bass line, a groove, and something that instantly made us think of Marcus, so we tried to provoke a meeting between the two artists.

It took time, but it finally happened in Monaco in 2014 for the one and only concert Marcus gave in Europe that summer—a concert specially designed for the Sporting Summer Festival—bringing together Joe Satriani, Manu Katché, Booker T, Trombone Shorty, and for the first time, Selah Sue.

Selah and Marcus have since bonded over a friendship and a desire to play together, which has shown itself several times during special events and has only grown over time.

During the year 2017, Marcus was working on his new album, Laid Black (nominated for the Grammys), accompanied by his wife Brenda, co-producer of the project, and with whom we have had the pleasure of collaborating in management since. According to Marcus, the cover of Que Sera Sera was Brenda’s idea, and Selah Sue seemed like an obvious choice to perform this song. The magic of the song and the result produced by Marcus made us all want to go further and work on a clip and on a series of concerts bringing Selah and Marcus together on the same stage.

02/12/2018 – Monaco (MC) – Opéra Garnier

During the year 2021, Selah was working on her new album, Personna. A masterpiece, on which Marcus composed the song « All the Way Down. »

Among the people who contributed to the development of Marcus’ career and his expansion across Europe, Jean-René Palacio was the initiator of this magnificent project, just like that of Tribute to Miles (see below).

During a dinner in 2007, Jean-René, then artistic director of the SBM Monte-Carlo group, asked Marcus if he would be tempted by a collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Principality. Marcus, who had already had the opportunity to play on the stage of the Opera, was seduced by the idea and deepened it by working on a repertoire specially designed for the occasion. The concert took place on November 29, 2008, at the Opéra Garnier as part of the Monte-Carlo Jazz Festival and was a completely sold out show.

A year later, under the Dreyfus Jazz label, the album « Marcus Miller, A Night in Monte-Carlo » was released, the recording of this unique concert and of this meeting between Marcus and his band, the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra directed by Damon Gupton, which also featured Roy Hargrove and Raùl  Midon as special guests.

This exceptional concert was performed a second time at the Opéra Garnier (with Robert Glasper, Gregoire Maret, Ken Hicks, and Edmar Castaneda as special guests) on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the S.B.M. and as part of the Jazz Festival, November 27, 2013. Then one last time on the Pinède Gould stage, for Jazz À Juan, on July 18, 2015, with Ibrahim Maalouf as a special guest.

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Istanbul Fondation for Culture and Arts (IKSV), as part of the Jazz Festival and broadcast live on television, Marcus gave a unique concert with his band and Turkish musicians. The event was conceived as a fusion between the East and the West that would have music as a common language.
